Study Guide: Proverbs 5

Dear Friends,

As we continue our journey through the Book of Proverbs, this week we explore Proverbs 5. This chapter provides a strong warning against adultery, emphasizing the importance of faithfulness and the consequences of immoral behavior.

Text (Proverbs 5:1-23, NIV)

  1. My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight,

  2. that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.

  3. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil;

  4. but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.

  5. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.

  6. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.

  7. Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say.

  8. Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house,

  9. lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel,

  10. lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another.

  11. At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent.

  12. You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!

  13. I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors.

  14. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.”

  15. Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.

  16. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?

  17. Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.

  18. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.

  19. A loving doe, a graceful deer—may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.

  20. Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

  21. For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths.

  22. The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.

  23. For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly.

Reflections

Proverbs 5 opens with an exhortation to pay attention to wisdom and insight to maintain discretion and preserve knowledge. This sets the stage for a strong warning against the allure of the adulterous woman, whose enticing words are compared to honey and smooth oil but lead to bitter consequences. For example, engaging in an affair might initially seem exciting and fulfilling, but it ultimately leads to regret, broken relationships, and personal disgrace.

The imagery of the adulterous woman’s path leading to death and the grave emphasizes the serious consequences of infidelity. This can be likened to the way poor decisions in relationships can lead to emotional and spiritual ruin. Her lack of awareness about the destruction she causes highlights the deceptive nature of sin.

Verses 7-14 provide practical advice to avoid the temptation of adultery. The father urges his sons to keep far from the adulterous woman to avoid losing their honor, dignity, and wealth. This can be applied today by maintaining strong boundaries and avoiding situations that could lead to temptation. For instance, not spending time alone with someone who is not your spouse in intimate settings can help prevent compromising situations.

The regret expressed in verses 11-14 underscores the importance of heeding wisdom and discipline. The lament of not listening to teachers and instructors serves as a powerful reminder of the long-term consequences of ignoring wise counsel. In real life, this could be seen in someone reflecting on the fallout from an affair, realizing too late the value of the advice they dismissed.

Verses 15-20 advocate for faithfulness in marriage, using the metaphor of drinking water from one’s own cistern to illustrate the joy and fulfillment found in a committed relationship. The imagery of a loving doe and graceful deer signifies the beauty and satisfaction of marital love. For example, investing time and effort into one’s marriage can lead to a deep, enduring bond that is both satisfying and joyful.

The chapter concludes with a reminder that God sees all our actions and examines our paths. The wicked are ensnared by their own sins and led astray by their lack of discipline. This emphasizes the importance of living a disciplined, faithful life. Understanding that nothing is hidden from God can motivate us to make choices that honor Him and align with His will.

Practical Applications

Maintaining discretion and preserving knowledge involves being mindful of our actions and the potential consequences. This can be done by setting personal boundaries and seeking accountability in relationships. For example, having an accountability partner or mentor can provide support and guidance in maintaining fidelity.

Avoiding the temptation of adultery requires proactive measures to protect oneself and one’s marriage. This might include open communication with your spouse, avoiding inappropriate relationships, and seeking counseling when needed. For instance, regularly discussing boundaries and expectations with your spouse can strengthen mutual trust and understanding.

Investing in your marriage involves prioritizing your spouse and nurturing the relationship. This can be done through regular date nights, open communication, and expressing love and appreciation. Making time for each other and addressing issues as they arise helps maintain a healthy, loving marriage.

Understanding the consequences of infidelity and the value of wisdom encourages us to heed advice and maintain discipline. Reflecting on the potential long-term impact of our actions can help us make wise choices. For example, considering the emotional and spiritual damage caused by infidelity can deter us from compromising situations.
